PostSubject: And we all fall down…   Sun Jun 22, 2008 11:03 pm

Ross leant over the rails which separated the Plas from the bay, Beau his doberman sat faithfully by his side, not really understanding his masters sudden lack of interest or stiff movement. Ross had come straight from work, dropping by his new flat to grab Beau and little else, still dressed in full UNIT garb, apart from any firearms. Along the sleeves of his jacket were damp from condensation from the rail, the air full of a miserable drizzle. Wales. Cardiff. This whole place was wet. All the time. Okay London was bad, but this was extreme.

Not to mention he had sat filing in an office all day, or playing toy soldiers with an UNIT officer who was the head of UNIT Cardiff. Where paperwork came to die. It was no secret that soldiers sent here were almost as bad as dead, they became office temps, never fitting in with the normal populace, not getting along with the office staff, who called them toy soldiers, and isolated them. The management was not much better, old officers, trying to prove they still had some kick and power within UNIT, and he was sat there alphabetizing menus to be sent out all over the world, while his old unit was replaced. So much for glory and honor, one laser beam had melted his chest together, and seemingly ended his career. Two and half months until active duty, for his mental stability. Not to mention weekly exams with an Approved UNIT medical officer. Oh the fun he was going to have.

So whilst all normal commuters wore suits and drove he wore a military uniform and took the bus to prove a point. That a) his manager's ego was far to big, (b) failed soldiers should never be left in-charge of real ones, and (c) this really sucked.

As Ross began to contemplate the day he had spent with the Doctor, Beau's attention finally wavered, and the dog swiftly took off down the side of the millennium center. Ross swore as the dog pulled him round, pulling on his injured chest, "BEAU!" He shouted after the doberman. He began pursuit, hoping lightly down the steps, and turning the corner in time to see the Cardiff Tourism Officer door swing shut. He looked around and saw no where else but in the bay for Beau to have gone, he looked through the grimy window. 6 o'clock and no body home, but a wide open door. he had dealt with Sonterans, he could handle a dirty looking tourist office. He stepped inside, despite a closed sign and the lack of anyone out front.

"Hello? Sorry to disturb, I think my dog ran in here?" He called through the front of the shop.

Ianto's mind didn't actually process the sound he'd heard as someone calling out at the Tourism Office, not at first, anyway. It took him a while to realize someone was calling out, and as he ran upstairs he was scared half to death by a dobberman right in front of him, at the top of the stairs. The dog didn't seem bothered at all, and it wasn't grunting, but Ianto still proceeded with caution. When he saw that the dog wouldn't bit his hand off, he walked into the Office, with the dog right behind him.

"Hello. I believe this nice dog belongs to you?" He asked, way before even looking at the person he was supposed to be talking to, busy as he was locking the door that gave access to the Hub. As Ianto turned around, the first thing he noticed was the red beret. "Oh..."

He knew that beret. He knew what it meant. Then, as his eyes inspected the rest of the man's figure, he saw he was in full uniform. Had something happened?

He glared at the dog as Beau walked in after the man. "That would be Beau." He saw the look on the mans face.

"Oh"

"Private Ross Jenkins At your service?" He said smartly. "Don't worry, I haven't come to deface moments or disturb the peace. I'm just here to do some paperwork." He stepped to man and dog, crouching down and whistling under his breath. The doberman came and tried to lick his face, he fended it off with his left hand and stood, grabbing the lead. He winced as he straightened up. Maybe such a chase hadn't been such a good idea. He could feel his face paling and he was suppressing the urge to vomit all over the tall man's nicely pressed suit.

"Anyway, what have you got down there?" He motioned to the door. He wasn't trying to threaten that man but he was UNIT and being curious was part of his job. He tried to slyly lean against the wall and make it look casual rather then like he had recently been shot by an alien laser and had his chest melted and lost most the muscle in his right shoulder as a result, and was currently finding the world spinning a little fast due to too much stress and over-exercise that day.

Ianto nodded as Private Jenkins introduced himself, but as he was readying himself to return the introduction, he noticed the soldier's face becoming a shade between white and yellow, and his eyes were no longer fixed on Ianto or the dog, but on some other point, trying very hard not to pass out.

"Can I help you, Private Jenkins?" Ianto asked, frowning, glad to be able to completely ignore the Private's question, as he let out both his hands to hold the man in case his legs faltered, which seemed more than likely at this point.

"Please, call me Ross, unless your like an officer or somethin…" He began to trail off. Here he was, a UNIT solider, big tough man, about to fall into the arms of a glorified welsh butler by the looks of things. He sucked in some air, ignoring the harsh sting of his chest.

"Not unless you've got a shot of Morphine and a talented, specialist doctor hidden in that waistcoat." He peered at the stranger in front of him. He tried to make it a joke, but the smile cracked and didn't quite make it. He gave up the 'i'm fine' pretty swiftly after that. He pushed away from the wall, turning quickly bending over and grabbing a bin with with his left hand and abandoning Beau to his own devices. After swiftly vomiting into the waste basket he slumped to the ground, watching as Beau began to sniff the poor guy.

"Sorry, I'll be alright in a minute and get out of your hair. Pushed it a bit today." He knew the man wouldn't know about anything he was talking about. and right now he didn't care, he just wanted the lights to stop dancing round in front of him.

Ianto would like to tell Ross about the doctor he had downstairs, dealing with something far less important than a UNIT soldier who could hardly stand, but something told him he couldn't just allow UNIT into the Hub, so he didn't speak. He could, however, try to help.
Ianto helped the man down, sitting him on the floor against the wall, and looked to see if the dog was safe - he was sitting near them, obviously perceiving that his owner wasn't alright.

"Have you recently been injured? Don't answer, just nod or shake your head." Ianto told Ross, all the while trying to figure out a way to help him without exposing Torchwood.

"Yes" He nodded, ignoring the mans instructions. "Should be dead. Who are you?" Ross asked simply.

"By my experiance you should be screamin' and phonin' the police by now…" He grumbled feebly. Something wasn't right in here. He tried to push himself up now, trying to gain a bit of dignity.

"Look, I'm fine." With that he slipped down the wall, back next to Ianto, with a small grin and a wince as he made a dull thudding noise as he hit the ground.

Ianto wouldn't be able to hold off the travel agent disguise for much longer, and he knew this, but he wouldn't rush the inevitable.

"I'm used to seeing injured people." Ianto sighed, not bothering to stop Ross from trying to get off the floor. He knew the soldier would drop down again eventually, and there was no point in trying to stop him. The pain he'd feel when he dropped again would be more than enough for him to not try that again in a while.

"Look, I'm fine."

Ianto got himself up and walked to the door he'd locked before.

"Of course you are." Ianto said, mockingly. "Still, it won't hurt to get you some painkillers, will it?" Pun completely intended.

"Oh haw de haw." He rolled his eyes, watching as his faithful companion followed the other man to the door. "What have you got down there? Hey?"

He watched the man's progress with interest, determined to find out what was going on.

"Travel agency with extras hey?"

((sorry it's quick, just leaving))

Ianto had his back turned to Ross by now, unlocking the door with Beau by his side. He looked to his left and smirked at the private's insistence. He wouldn't budge, not yet.

As he turned around, leaving the office, and pulled the door to him, Ianto looked at Ross, still amused.

"Don't try to stand up, you'll only hurt yourself." He closed the door carefully, as to not hurt the dog, and locked it from inside, taking the keys with him. A quick trip to the medical bay would be enough to ask Owen for random advice - he'd make up an excuse later - and get a few syringes of morphine. Then, he'd have to send the young soldier to the hospital.

Ross groaned on the floor, this was appalling in his opinion where was he going. He pulled himself up using the desk and the wall, wondering where his dog and that man had gone, looking at a CCTV camera he decided to try something.

"Excuse me. What's your name? I need some assistance here." Maybe someone new would come, and at any rate he wasn't leaving without Beau. He allowed some time for his head to clear and the world to slow down a bit. He took out his phone, flicking through the contracts, he soon released that he had no one to call who wasn't in london or dead, he slumped into the desk chair. He could call a taxi, but he'd rather wait for the man and Beau to return. He was slightly alarmed that the other man seemed to know what UNIT was.

He shifted uneasily, his chest feeling constricted and sore. He guessed from the smell of damp and echoes which had come through the door that the guy was going to be gone a long while. He slowly removed the his outer jackets. He slowly removed his white tee-shirt, he hissed. He didn't really care who saw him on CCTV, as long as they didn't see him in person. He was a well muscled lad, but his shooting had ruined the appearance of his chest.

Still raw burn scars ran from his right side of his breastbone to over his shoulder. An old tattoo of a green comet shooting upwards, with a greyhound with a red 40 racing sheet on, running across a UNIT logo. His old team. The Greyhounds. It was twisted and distorted, he tried to ignore how twisted and ugly his chest was, or how much muscle had been lost, and how odd it looked and remembered to be grateful he was alive. He checked the wound over briefly how the UNIT medical team had shown him.

He was guessing a muscle strain or something, a couple of the stitches that were due to be removed the next day appeared to have popped, he hissed seeing the blood. "Shit." He grabbed a roll of tape from out of the draw, and used his shirt as a makeshift dressing. He put his jackets and body suit back on before anyone returned to see his damaged torso.

Now all he could do was wait, and try and find out what was happening here.

Ianto hurried back upstairs with a few syringes of morphine and, just in case, some bandages and hydrogen peroxide.
As he came back, with Beau by his side, he saw that Ross had taken his top off; Ianto looked at his injury with furrowed brow. It looked...Well, it looked bad. But not disgustingly bad, it looked bad in the sense that Ross should probably have been taking it easy, and that hadn't been the case.

"Blow some stitches, did you?" He asked, approaching the soldier and kneeling down beside him. "You want me to do this, or can you manage on your own?"

He knew how some people preferred to take care of their own injuries, and Ianto wasn't about to cross some kind of limit with Ross.

He gestured for the morphine. Once he had sorted painkillers out then he would continue the coversation. He glanced over the needle, seemed clean enough, all military issue. He quickly injected the pain killer, then glanced over the man before him.

"Knock your self out… but first tell me your name at least, and you do know how to do this?" Ross questioned quietly, patting Beau lightly on the head. "Where you been hey?"

Ianto smiled nervously at Ross. Needles set his teeth on edge, sometimes.

"Ianto Jones, at your service." He said, "And yes, don't worry, I know 99.9% of what I'm doing."

He would have to stop the minor bleeding, desinfect the wound - it could burn - and possibly stitch the man up again. That could pose as a problem, but Ianto didn't want to scare Ross just yet.
He wet the bandage with the hydrogen peroxide, and pressed it on Ross' wound. Upon his question, Ianto simply gazed up smirking slyly, and concentrated back on what he was doing.

"I was just looking around in my first aid kit." He said, still smirking.

He stared impassively ahead. No pain, no fear, a solider. His father's words echoed through his brain. A real man. That was a bitch, it was stinging like one anyway. He bit his lip and gripped the chair a bit.

"Your lucky Beau trusts you. He's a trained military dog." Ianto was pressing down still. "So Ianto Jones just how big is your first aid kit?" The blisters on his chest were burning, and he was biting back the pain, showing no other outward sign of his pain. His right arm was trembling, not from pain, but his grip on chair was straining the weakened and wasted muscles.

"I hate potatoes." He growled stiffly.

Ianto glanced at Beau, and then focused back on Ross' chest.

"I'm aware of my luck." He said, nodding. "He's a friendly military dog, though."

Ianto had to chuckle when Ross asked about the size of his first aid kit. He wasn't one to brag, but considering that his first aid kit was a whole medical bay, it would have to be special.

"Bigger than most." He said simply, bracing himself for the stitch-up. "Relax, it'll hurt more if you contract the muscles." He warned.

Ianto had no idea what Ross meant when he said potatoes, but he was sure the private wasn't talking about regular ones. No potato could shoot through someone's chest, that Ianto was sure of.

"A potato did this to you? Must have been angry." Ianto tried to joke, but it was no joke that Ross' chest was probably burning like hell, and there was nothing either of them could really do. Ianto finished preparing the stitching materials, and looked up at the soldier's face, worryingly.

"This...You probably want at least half a dose of morphine for this."

"One whole set of pissed off potatoes... killed my whole unit. Me they melted a whole in me and now half my butt is on my chest." He tried to smile, but it came as more of a grimace.

"I'll take your advice on that one." He took the needle up with a shudder. He'd rather he was in control on that one. He plunged the needle in quickly, and got it over and done with. His head was swimming a bit now. Rain began to patter outside, dribbling down the shop front.

"I hate cardiff too."

Ianto tried to shed some hope on Ross by smiling, it was the least he could do right now.

"Knowing perfectly well what you do, I'm not surprised you got pissed potatoes shooting at you, comes with the job, hey?" Ianto waited for Ross to plunge the needle and anethetize himself, and then he was at work. Doing his best not to shake - he wouldn't want to ruin the healing wound any more than it already was ruined - he stitched Ross' chest up rather quickly, looking up to see the rain starting to fall.

"You'll get used to it. Everyone eventually does..." Ianto told Ross, finishing up completely. "There it is. Best I could do."

"I don't plan on getting used to it, or it's ungrateful UNIT staff." He growled lowly. The hope shedding smile was wasted on Ross, who had got used to people training to make him more agreeable lately.

"And what would you Ianto Jones, Tourist Office of Cardiff know about UNIT or it's operations?" He growled, and if this man wasn't currently stitching him up he would have pulled a weapon of some sort out. "What do you, Ianto Jones, know about me?"

He watched as the man finished the stitches, awaiting his answer.

"Good, then, not long now." Ianto said, absolutely not fazed that Ross was becoming more aggressive.
He looked up at Ross, as serious as he could ever be, staring right into the soldier's eyes.

"This place you're in?" He began, lifting both his eyebrows. "Torchwood Three." Ianto stood up, disposing of the used material and gloves, tying the bin bag he'd brought along just for this purpose.

"Now, if you're going to start screaming and want to see what's downstairs, I'll be forced to say no. And I think you're in no state to start a fight." He said, casually, leaning onto the counter, looking down at Ross. "About you, I know absolutely nothing." He finished, calmly.

"Well that explains it. I haven't just finally cracked then." He said simply.

"And that means you know everything you want to about me. And don't worry I'm just a 'grunt' as your leader and my leaders call it, and very disposable, not that bright, and frankly not exactly in working order, not worth much so I'll be making my own way back."

He began to push himself out of his chair. "Oh and thanks for the help. With the stitches that is, and not letting anything you keep down there eat Beau."

"Good luck with your rift, I'll just go back to alphabetizing menus, and patrolling corridors like a fucking puppy." He didn't mean to sound so bitter, but he was used to Torchwood's and UNIT's attitude to UNIT privates, and had experienced plenty of it first hand.

Ianto felt sorry for the guy. He seemed genuinely bitter, which wasn't surprising considering he was probably a good soldier reduced to a desk job, rendered almost useless by his superiors. Ianto would probably be as bitter and angry as Ross was.

"If you were disposable, they wouldn't make the enormous effort I think they made to bring you back." Ianto said, looking at Ross' chest, contemplative. "It wasn't a problem, happy to help. Oh, and nothing we keep down there likes to eat dogs, I don't think. There's a tendency for bigger animals, Beau's safe."

Ianto smiled politely again, looking outside. It was raining sideways by now, Cardiff-style, as Ross would probably put it, and Ianto considered the implications of Ross heading out into it. The stitches wouldn't hang for long, that way.

"You should probably wait until it stops raining. Could be days, I know, but I think it's unadvisable to go out at this time." Ianto said, leaving the decision entirely up to Ross. He was his own man, as much as UNIT let him, that is.

"Where else have I got to go?" He smiled sadly. "Plus I think my flat's roof may have fallen in by now, I've already most likely pissed both our bosses off by now for not attempting to break into your base, or giving you any vital info."

He pulled on his jackets, hands shaking a little, he could feel the new stitches there.

"It's good to know Beau is safe to roam round the Cardiff Tourist shop." He smiled, "Know any good taxi firms. I've only been here 4 days, and well I haven't got out much." he gestured to his chest. He peered into the outside gloom.

"Sorry for snapping, everyone, including me is beginning to question my mental stability, and being stitched up by your average tourist information office worker is sorta on my list of crazy things." He emptied one of his pockets quickly onto the desk, pushing a gun and three knives back into various hidden spots on his uniform.

Ianto shrugged.

"I make a mean cup of coffee and tea. It's my specialty. If you'd like, I could make you a cup of one or the other, while you wait just a little longer for me to find the phone book." He told Ross, still leaned onto the counter. "Oh, and? They can't hear you. That door keeps everything out, and everything in." Ianto smirked.

He felt sorry for the guy, not because he was injured, but because he was probably nevr meant to do what he was doing now. You can't take a gun from a soldier's hand, give him a pile of papers, and expect him to behave.

"Also? This is not really a Tourism Office." Ianto winked at Ross this time, smiling more openly as he winked.

"Don't they ever go home, it's like late." He mentioned idly. He'd love to get inside Torchwood, maybe not as much as his bosses would, but never the less the less uptight organization intrigued him. "Yeah. I could murder a coffee right now." He listened to Ianto.

"You and this whole place are a complete mystery to me. Mr Jones." he grinned back at Ianto, "You and your friends."

Beau had settled down somewhere out of sight and a loud snoring could be heard.

"By the way, you'll never get him out of here. He's a failed military dog. Likes people. Doesn't do rain." He grinned broadly. The first time he'd actually spoken to someone in a friendly manner since his day with the Doctor.
